Four Crosses - Memorial of the Louis Cross

Four Crosses - Memorial of the Louis Cross       On Saturday, 20 July 2024, runners from the 5th Special Forces Regiment (5th SFR) participated in the Louis Cross Memorial, representing the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic.
In front of the municipal office, they participated in the commemorative act of laying wreaths at the memorial plaque commemorating Louis Cross and the French partisans fighting in the Rajec Valley, who were already active in this area in the early days of the Slovak National Uprising.
This running event has been held on an annual basis since 13 September 2009. The event was originally conceived as a tourist meeting for hikers and cyclists. The event was organised by the Žilina Friends of France and Slovakia Club. The route for hikers was 13 kilometres long, while cyclists competed on a 24-kilometre track. The memorial was temporarily suspended for some time. Two years ago, residents of Mala Cerna and members of the 5th Special Forces Regiment revived the cross-country race. The current format is designed for runners and hikers with a total length of 12.5 kilometres, featuring a combination of challenging ascents and descents.
The "Four Crosses - Louis Cross" run is dedicated to the memory of Louis Cross, a French partisan who was active in the Mala Fatra and Sulov Rocks areas. He also reached Mala Cerna during this time and was later made an honorary citizen of this picturesque village.
